This move follows a recent FBI raid on the home of Adams’ chief fundraiser as part of the broader investigation into whether his 2021 campaign collaborated with a Brooklyn-based construction company to funnel foreign funds. Adams, a Democrat, has not faced any accusations of wrongdoing at this stage, but the investigation focuses on potential connections to Turkey.

To secure a court-authorized search warrant for seizing Adams’ phones and iPad, prosecutors would have needed to demonstrate probable cause of finding evidence related to a crime on these electronic devices. Mayor Adams, emphasizing transparency, stated, “As a former member of law enforcement, I expect all members of my staff to follow the law and fully cooperate with any sort of investigation — and I will continue to do exactly that. I have nothing to hide.”

Adams’ campaign attorney and spokesperson, Boyd Johnson, revealed that the mayor promptly complied with the FBI’s request and handed over the electronic devices after being approached by agents following an event. Johnson stressed that Adams, having learned of the federal investigation, proactively reported any improper actions by an individual within the campaign to investigators.

The investigation centers on alleged foreign campaign contributions, with authorities exploring whether foreign nationals used individuals in New York’s Turkish American communities to act as “straw contributors,” disguising foreign funds as donations from American citizens. Adams, who has strong ties to the city’s Turkish American community, has defended his campaign, expressing shock at the possibility of inappropriate actions by campaign staff.

This development marks an escalation in the federal probe, and the outcome of the investigation will determine its implications for Mayor Adams, who has not been accused of any wrongdoing so far.
